Keeping Couples Together at Home

When care needs change, staying together matters most. Live-in care allows both partners to remain in their shared home, with support tailored to each of them.

What is Live-in Care for Couples?

Live-in care for couples is designed for situations where one or both partners need support, but remaining together at home is what matters most. A professional carer lives in the home, providing tailored support for each person, while daily life continues as normal.

Who is it for?

Live-in care for couples is suitable for a wide range of situations. Our care team will always carry out an individual assessment for each person before arranging care.

Partners who don’t want to be separated

Couples who have shared a home for decades and for whom living apart, even temporarily, is not something they wish to consider. Live-in care means there is no need to.

Spouses caring for a partner

Where one person has taken on a caring role, this can become physically and emotionally demanding over time. A live-in carer provides consistent, professional support and relieves the pressure on the caring partner.

Adult children arranging care for parents

For families who want to keep both parents together in their own home, rather than facing the possibility of separation in residential care, live-in care offers a practical and compassionate alternative.

Couples where one partner has dementia

Unfamiliar surroundings can be confusing and distressing for someone living with dementia. Remaining at home, with the person they know best, offers comfort and continuity that a care home often cannot replicate.

  • “Live-in care has given us reassurance that our parents are safe and being looked after at home, where they want to be.”

  • “My parents have used Promedica for almost 3 years and when 18 months ago their needs became greater and we moved to having 2 live in carers. In February my mother passed away. The 2 carers were exceptional in how they cared for my mother, my father and us during those last few hours. The carer who later stayed to be with my father has been empathetic and understanding of his grief and needs. This gave the extended family such peace of mind as we do not live close by. We could not be more grateful for her care and compassion.”

Why do couples choose live-in care?

For many couples, the home has been shared for decades. A long life together creates routines, memories, and a sense of stability. Living apart is rarely something either partner wants. With live-in care for couples, it doesn’t have to be.

Stay together at home

There is no need to move out or face the possibility of being separated. Both partners remain in the home they know, with their routines intact.

Support for both people

Care is tailored individually, whether one partner needs more support or both have different needs. In many cases, one carer can support both people.

Relieves pressure on a caring partner

Where one person has taken on caring responsibilities, a live-in carer provides consistent professional support and makes daily life more manageable.

Continuity and familiarity

Remaining at home avoids the disruption of a new environment, which can be especially important where there is memory loss or dementia.

Flexible, around-the-clock support

Care is there when it is needed, rather than limited to scheduled visit times. This brings reassurance for both partners, day and night.

Often more affordable than expected

Because one carer can support two people, live-in care for couples is usually more cost-effective than two separate residential care placements.

What does day-to-day support look like?

Support is flexible and built around both partners’ routines. Each person has their own individual care plan. These are regularly reviewed and updated as needs change over time.

Support may include:

Personal care, including washing, dressing, and mobility support
Medication management and prompting
Meal preparation and nutrition support
Household duties including cleaning and laundry
Accompaniment to appointments or social activities
Companionship and reassurance
Dementia and memory care support
Night support where needed

How much does live-in care for couples cost?

A single live-in carer can often support two people, so care for couples is priced at a surcharge to the standard weekly rate, not double the price.

Indicative weekly rates:

Standard live-in care rate from £1,295 / week
Couples’ care surcharge from £250 / week
Effective cost per person ~£775 / week each

This compares favourably with the cost of two residential care placements, which can each exceed £1,200 per week. Costs will vary depending on individual care needs. Contact a Care Consultant for a personalised quote.

Possible funding options include:

NHS Continuing Healthcare
Personal Health Budget
Attendance Allowance
Local authority funding
Self-funding

How is support arranged when both partners have different needs?

Every couple’s situation is different. In some cases, one partner may have taken on most of the caring responsibilities while the other requires support. In others, both partners need assistance, but in different ways.

Live-in care allows both people to receive support as individuals, each with their own care plan, while continuing to live together. Care is tailored to each person without disrupting the shared home or daily routines.

Where one partner’s needs are more complex (for example, specialist dementia support or significant mobility assistance) we will discuss the most appropriate arrangement during your care assessment.

Common questions about live-in care for couples

Can one carer support two people at the same time?

In many cases, yes. A single live-in carer can provide support to both partners, particularly where needs are manageable individually and the tasks don’t require simultaneous attention. If one partner’s needs are more complex, we’ll discuss the right arrangement during your care assessment.

What if one partner’s needs are much greater than the other’s?

This is very common. Both partners receive individual care plans, and the carer’s time and focus is allocated according to each person’s needs. The partner with higher needs receives proportionally more support, while the other benefits from companionship and help with everyday tasks.

What if one partner has dementia?

We have extensive experience supporting couples where one person is living with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Remaining in a familiar home, alongside a familiar partner, can provide significant comfort and reassurance for someone with dementia. Our carers are trained in dementia care and work sensitively with both partners. You can read more about our dementia live-in care here.

Is live-in care better for couples than a care home?

Residential care homes cannot always accommodate couples together, particularly if their needs differ significantly or no double rooms are available. Live-in care keeps both partners in their own home, with support that adapts to each of them individually, and without the disruption of moving to a new environment. It is also often more cost-effective than two separate care home placements.

How quickly can care be arranged?

We can often arrange live-in care within a matter of days, depending on the situation. Contact your local Care Consultant to discuss timescales for your specific circumstances.

Are Promedica24 carers regulated?

Yes. Promedica24 is regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and rated Good. All our carers are carefully vetted, trained, and supported by our management team throughout the care relationship. You can find out more about how our service works here.
