Celebrating Friendship with Care Worker During Pandemic
Over the last few months, we have been all cheering and supporting our amazing NHS, Care Workers and other key workers, who dedicate their lives to helping others and keeping the country going, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Live-in Care Workers, such as those from Promedica24, ensure older and vulnerable people can remain safe in the comfort of their own homes, and they should be commended for their passion. In June, we have celebrated National Carers Week – a week that reminds us that a Care Worker is often more than just a person who helps vulnerable people in their day to day lives – they sometimes become the best of friends.
Cheshire resident, Carolyn Sigley, 59, from Poynton lives with a degenerative health condition and, because of mobility issues, uses a wheelchair. Carolyn was born with the illness and gradually lost her ability to walk. In her thirties, she decided to become more independent and move out from her parents’ farm into her own place and live with a Care Worker.
While Carolyn has had many experiences of live-in care over the years, her time with Promedica24 for the last three years has been the most satisfying. In that time, she has developed a wonderful friendship with her Polish Care Worker, Krystina.
Being of a similar age and having shared interests, Krystina and Carolyn were perfectly matched by Promedica24. The constant presence of her Care Worker has given Carolyn the independence she needed to thrive. They both love the outdoors and Krystina ensures Carolyn enjoys a stroll around the back garden every day. When they get back from their walk, they spend time doing embroidery, chatting, cooking, and watching TV. Carolyn’s passion is to use an application on her mobile phone to paint pictures, similar to oil paintings. She also enjoys playing the Word Master game, which earned her the nickname ‘Computer Whizz’.

Carolyn said: “Being with Promedica24 is different than any with any other service provider. I love spending time with Krystina who is my main carer. She has been living with me for the last three years, for a period of eight weeks at a time. After eight weeks, Krystina goes home for a break and I have another Care Worker from Poland who is also lovely but, I always look forward to Krystina coming back. Krystina makes me feel secure. We have a wonderful friendship and we are both remarkably similar in our tastes.”

Carolyn is close to her mum and sees her as often as she can. However, during the lockdown due to Covid-19, Carolyn could not see her as she was shielding. In that situation having Krystina around provided much needed companionship and helped tackle loneliness. As Carolyn and her Care Worker self-isolated the risk of becoming infected was limited as the amount of people coming into her home was reduced. This is one of the advantages of live-in care, being safe at home. Promedica24 work with the clients on a one-to-one basis in the comfort of their own homes, allowing them to cultivate their hobbies, maintain their independence and achieve a sense of happiness and wellbeing.
