Live-in care means that a carer moves into your home, typically staying in a spare bedroom, and is on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support you or your loved one with daily living activities and routines.
Our carers help with daily routines, personal care, and companionship, allowing people to stay safe, independent, and engaged in life. Families can enjoy peace of mind knowing there’s consistent support tailored to individual needs.
Live-in care is for anyone who needs daily support but wants to remain in the comfort of their own home. It can be a good option for older adults who need 24-hour care, people living with conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s, or multiple sclerosis, and adults with learning disabilities or autism.
Families often choose live-in care when residential care isn’t the right fit, or when consistency and one-to-one attention are especially important. By having a dedicated carer living in the home, people receive personalised support with everyday tasks, companionship, and reassurance, while staying close to family and community.
Our live-in carers receive ongoing training to support a wide range of needs, including:
“The carers have always been very thoughtful, not only looking after all aspects of housework and cooking, but also thinking of ways to improve my mother’s quality of life. One weeded the drive in her own time! Another sewed a seat cover for my mother’s plastic hospital cushion so that it matched the chair. Thoughtful gestures like this take the caring a step further.”
Gillian, Daughter
“The carer makes exercises set by the physiotherapist fun. If the weather is fine, they both enjoy a short stroll to the local park. Mother now has regular home-cooked meals and has a busy daily routine, which is wonderful. Joanna mostly hosted a delicious birthday tea party for Mother this September and welcomes all guests when they have dropped by.”

“The carers were not strangers in mum’s home as she feared but became familiar faces, giving her professional care and kindness. She enjoyed getting to know them and sharing stories about Dad and the rest of the family, in the home they made together over 60 years ago. We are grateful to Promedica24 for improving Mum’s quality of life and giving ours back to us!”

What can a live-in carer help with?
A live-in carer can support with a wide range of daily needs, from personal care and meal preparation to household tasks and companionship. They are there to make life safer and more comfortable, whether that means helping with medication, getting out to appointments, or simply offering company and reassurance. The level of support is flexible and tailored to each person, so care fits around individual routines and preferences.
One of the primary responsibilities of a live-in carer is to provide compassionate assistance with personal care tasks. This includes helping with bathing, dressing, and toileting needs. Our professional carers are trained to maintain the utmost dignity and respect while assisting with these intimate activities. They understand the importance of preserving independence and encouraging self-reliance whenever possible. With a live-in carer’s support, individuals can feel confident and comfortable in their daily routines, knowing that their personal care needs are being met with kindness and expertise.
Medication management and reminders
Ensuring proper medication adherence is crucial for maintaining good health, especially for those with chronic conditions or complex treatment plans. Our live-in carers are equipped to assist with medication management and provide timely reminders. They can help organise and dispense medications according to prescribed schedules, ensuring that the right dosages are taken at the correct times. Additionally, they can monitor for potential side effects and report any concerns to healthcare professionals. With a live-in carer’s support, individuals can have peace of mind knowing that their medication regimen is being carefully managed, reducing the risk of missed doses or improper administration.
Meal planning, preparation, and nutrition
Appropriate nutrition is essential for overall well-being, but it can be challenging to plan and prepare balanced meals, especially for those with dietary restrictions or mobility limitations. Our live-in carers are trained to assist with meal planning, taking into account individual preferences, dietary needs, and any specific health requirements. They can prepare nutritious and delicious meals, ensuring that each dish is tailored to the individual’s tastes and dietary guidelines. Additionally, our carers can provide guidance on healthy eating habits, portion control, and the importance of staying hydrated. With a live-in carer’s support, individuals can enjoy the convenience of having wholesome meals prepared for them, promoting better health and quality of life.
Light housekeeping
Whether it is planting your garden or having your favourite ornaments and knick knacks on display, taking pride in your home is beneficial to both mental and physical wellbeing. However, keeping up with daily chores is not always possible for people with care needs. If you or your loved one need support with general household duties, your live-in carer is there to help. They can offer assistance with cleaning and tidying, shopping, gardening, laundry, or any other small tasks that become more difficult when our care needs change.
Attending social activities and appointments
Needing care doesn’t mean being stuck at home. With a live-in carer, you’ll have somebody on hand to accompany you to medical appointments, your favourite café, or even a trip abroad! With bespoke support readily available, you can retain control over your routines and make decisions based on your personal preferences, so you can continue to live life as you know it. Our carers are also trained to provide assistance during travel, ensuring that you can navigate airports, hotels, and various destinations with ease. Whether it’s organising accessible accommodation, facilitating transportation, or assisting with daily activities during the vacation, our carers are committed to making holidays enjoyable and stress-free.
Companionship and emotional support
Loneliness and isolation are big contributors to poor mental health in people with care needs. At Promedica24, we make an effort to match the people we support with carers who can enhance their quality of life at home in a way that goes beyond meeting care needs. Having companionship, sharing a conversation over a cup of tea, interacting with patience, time and a sense of humour throughout everyday life can genuinely improve outcomes. It can keep people at home longer, put them in a better mood, help them recover faster from illness and even stabilise or reduce signs and symptoms of dementia. A live-in carer not only alleviates loneliness and isolation through their companionship but also supports you to keep an active social life and continue to do the things you enjoy. With one of our fully trained carers there when you need them, you can be sure that you or your loved one will be safe, comfortable, and making the most out of life.

“Joanna integrated well with my mother Doris, she made her very happy and they were always laughing and talking. She made my mother feel wanted and catered to her whims. They bonded very quickly, and she ensured that my mother was the centre of everything.
She even got my mother dancing to music to give her some exercise. We saw a marked improvement with my mother and would welcome her back at any time. Joanna is a credit to the caring industry and my mother was very lucky to have someone so thoughtful in everything she did.“

“Since having a carer, I have moved out from my parents’ and am living independently in my own flat. I have a full-time job working in the IT industry.
My carer helps me with performing tasks in my daily life such as dressing, bathing, cooking and general household chores. In my spare time I like to travel to new places and see new things, which my carer supports me with by driving.
My life has greatly improved as I’m now able to live independently. I have always been concerned about my future life after my parents are no longer able to care for me.
However, thanks to the carers from Promedica24, I am able to live my life in the way that I want and achieve my goals.”

What are the benefits of Live-in Care?
Live-in care offers the reassurance of round-the-clock support while allowing people to remain in the comfort of their own home. It means keeping familiar surroundings, staying close to family and friends, and maintaining daily routines. With one-to-one attention, care is fully personalised, helping to promote independence, dignity, and peace of mind for both the individual and their loved ones.
Research shows 97% of people prefer to stay in their own home rather than move to a residential care facility. Live-in care allows you to age in the home you know, avoiding the stress and upheaval of leaving your cherished home, belongings, memories, and community. This option offers personalised, one-on-one care tailored to your needs, ensuring comfort and security in a familiar environment. With live-in care, you maintain your independence and lifestyle, reduce the risk of infections, and receive continuous health monitoring, all while staying connected with family and friends.
Personalised, One-on-One Care
Unlike care homes, live-in care provides dedicated, unrushed support focused solely on you and your preferences. Your carer gets to know you as an individual to provide tailored, dignified assistance that respects your routines and needs. With a carer attending just to you, there are no rigid schedules or concerns about staff availability. Your live-in carer learns your likes, dislikes, life story and can engage you in meaningful activities you enjoy. From bathing to meals to enabling hobbies, everything is tailored specifically for you in the comfort of your own home. This one-to-one care ensures you receive discreet, respectful and consistent support from someone who knows you as a whole person, not just a list of requirements.
Continuity of Care
Having the same familiar carer living with you offers invaluable continuity, friendly companionship, and peace of mind compared to rotating shift workers. This can be especially beneficial for those with conditions like dementia. With a live-in carer, there is no disruptive staff changeover – you receive consistent, personalised care from someone who knows your routines, needs and preferences intimately. This continuity helps reduce confusion and anxiety. Your carer becomes a trusted friend who understands your life story, which promotes a strong rapport. You can feel relaxed and comfortable having the same friendly face providing attentive support day and night. This continuity and companionship can greatly improve wellbeing and quality of life.
Enabling Independence
Our experienced carers work closely with the people they support, their families, and other healthcare providers to create personalised care plans that address their unique requirements. This personalised approach ensures that individuals receive the right level of support to lead fulfilling lives while preserving their independence.
Peace of Mind
Live-in care offers reassurance to family members knowing their loved one is receiving attentive, around-the-clock care in the comfort of their own home. With a live-in carer, families can have confidence that their loved one’s needs are being met consistently by someone who knows them well. This peace of mind alleviates worry and guilt, allowing families to focus on quality time together.

What is the difference between live-in care and residential care?
The key difference between live-in care and residential care lies in where care takes place. With live-in care, support is provided at home by a dedicated carer, allowing people to stay in familiar surroundings and keep their routines. Residential care, on the other hand, involves moving into a care home where support is shared among staff and residents.
Self-authored timetable and freedom to choose meals
Complete privacy and independence
Family and friends able to visit at any time of the day
Consistent care and rapport built with carer
Couples can stay together
Owners remain united with pets
Familiar surroundings which can prevent the acceleration of conditions such as dementia
How much does Live-in Care Cost?
Our managed care service starts at £1,295 per week. Live-in care is often more affordable than many people expect, especially compared to residential or nursing homes, and it comes with the benefit of staying in your own home.
The exact cost depends on the level of support needed, such as:
Whether personal or complex care is required
The numbers of carers needed

Preparing for your Care Assessment
Your Care Assessment is an important first step in shaping the support you receive. It helps us understand what matters to you, the routines you want to keep, the areas where you would like help, and any concerns you may have about starting care. We will talk through your health, what you feel comfortable managing on your own, and where extra support could make life easier or safer.
We will also look at your home environment with you and highlight anything that might need adjusting to support your wellbeing. If family members, friends or healthcare professionals are already involved, we may speak to them as well.
Everything we learn during this visit helps us create a care plan that reflects your preferences, goals and daily life, and that you feel confident in and agree to.
Most assessments take around two hours, although a little preparation beforehand can make the process quicker and more straightforward.
What should I expect?
A review of the data collected during your initial assessment
Authentication of any Powers of Attorney
Confirmation of capacity to consent
Identification of areas of risk to you or your carer
What else will we be looking at?
Physical health considerations
Health conditions and medical history
We’ll speak to you about your medical history and ask about any chronic or long-term conditions that influence the level of care you’ll need, and how they’re currently being treated or managed. This step is crucial because it gives us an initial overview of any regular medication, doctor’s appointments as well as ongoing symptoms we need to take into consideration. It also means we can work more effectively with your other health and social care providers. If you’re looking for respite care while you’re recovering after a hospital stay, this is especially important!
We’ll also inquire about any dietary needs, and any potential risks related to nutrition and hydration, and ask if you have any sensory impairments such as blindness or deafness, and how you’d like to be supported (if at all!).
Mobility and physical limitations
This is similar to the previous point, but we’ll go into more detail, so we can tailor our care package to your exact support needs. A person using a wheelchair will need different support than someone who uses a walking stick, or someone who needs no mobility aid but has trouble climbing stairs. Mobility and physical limitations also inform the level of personal care you need, though there are of course other factors at play. By assessing your mobility levels, we can make sure that you receive the right level of care, from the right carer.

Cognitive and mental health factors
Memory and cognitive abilities
We’ll ask you about any conditions that may impact your memory and cognition, such as dementia, and how it affects you. Additionally, we’ll look at your support needs and preferences when it comes to communication to make sure we communicate in a way that suits you best. We may also discuss this with your Attorney or loved one where appropriate, so we’re aware of everything we need to know to put together the right care plan for you.
Mental health and well-being
Learning about your mental health and well-being is an important part of the care assessment. Similar to your physical health, we’ll ask you to share anything in your medical history that is relevant to the support you receive. For example, if your mental health gets worse in winter and you have specific ways to cope with that (such as taking your lunch in town more often, or going on holiday), we can incorporate that into our care plan. If you’re currently being seen by a mental health professional, letting us know allows us to work more closely with them.

Social and emotional factors
Social interaction
This is where we get to know you and your social life. We will be asking about you and your family, where you grew up or went to school, which family members you are close to, and anyone else that is important to you as a person.
We’ll also look at how much you would like your family to be involved with your care and support and your involvement in your local community.
Emotional support needs
Your emotional support needs are just as important as your physical needs. We will ask how you cope with difficult situations and how you would like to be supported. For example, if you’d like to be given space or prefer company when your mood is low, if you’re a chatty person or not, if a certain type of music always cheers you up. We want to make sure the care we provide is truly person-centred, so if something is important to you, it’s important to us.
Your Day-To-Day Life
Your day-to-day activities are where we take a close look at your routine, hobbies, interests, and your needs and preferences with regards to your home and environment and how they relate to your care and support. We will ask you about your ability to carry out daily tasks and how you would like to be supported, your evening and night-time support needs, and general aspects of your routine.
When do you like to have dinner? Do you prefer to cook yourself with minimal support, or would you like your carer to prepare your meals under your supervision? If you have religious or spiritual beliefs, how do they feature in your daily life? Are you a late or an early riser, and do you like to watch TV before bed?
All those details will help your Care Team get to know you and build a care plan that fits into your daily life with minimal disruption, so you can continue to live life as you know it.

What is live-in care, and how does it work?
Live-in care means a trained carer lives in your loved one’s home to provide 24/7 support. This includes help with personal care (washing, dressing), medication prompting, household tasks, companionship and emotional support. A live-in carer offers continuity, allowing routines to stay familiar and reducing the risk of isolation.
How much does live-in care cost?
The cost of live-in care depends on several factors, including the level of support you or your loved one need, what kind of funding is available, and if you’re opting for long-term support or short-term respite. At Promedica24, our managed care packages start at £1,295 per week.
Many people are surprised to find that live-in care costs are comparable or even lower than the cost of a care home, especially once you consider the one-to-one support and personalised care.

What are the things a live-in carer can’t do? Are there limits to their role?
Yes. There are a few clear limits to what a live-in carer can do. Your carer will need breaks, so they have clear rest and sleep times each day. They don’t carry out heavy lifting, DIY, or specialist household maintenance, and they won’t perform unsafe manual handling without the right equipment and training. While they can help with medication reminders and, in some cases, enhanced tasks after extra training, they don’t perform advanced medical or nursing procedures such as injections. They also don’t provide specialist services like professional hairdressing or technical grooming.
Can live-in care help with running errands, housework, and companionship?
Yes. Depending on your care plan, live-in carers can help with shopping, cleaning, laundry, and day-to-day errands. They also provide companionship, emotional support, and help maintain daily routines, something that’s often just as important as the more clinical side of care.
How do I pay for live-in care? Is there funding available?
You can pay for live-in care privately, or use funding from your local council or the NHS. If you’re eligible for local authority support, you can usually request a direct payment, which lets you control the budget and choose a care provider — including providers outside the council’s approved list — provided it meets your assessed needs. If you qualify for NHS Continuing Healthcare, you may receive a personal health budget that can also be used to arrange care, though local policies may set some limits. Additional support may come from benefits such as Attendance Allowance (for those 65+), Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for adults under 65, or Carer’s Allowance for family carers. These benefits can help cover or contribute to care costs alongside your funding package.
How quickly can I get live-in care?
Live-in care can be arranged in a timescale that suits you. Depending on your individual circumstances, you could be settled with your new live-in carer in as little as 72h.
