Funding Hourly Care

Hourly care offers flexible, personalised support in the comfort of your own home that adapts to your specific needs and schedule. Hourly Care costs vary depending on the type of support you need, where you are based, or if you need night-time support, so understanding which funding options are available to you is crucial.

NHS Funding

While full NHS funding is primarily available for individuals with complex health needs, there are options to explore for hourly care:

Continuing Healthcare Assessment

  • Request this from your GP or social worker
  • Determines eligibility for NHS-funded care
  • If eligible, you may receive funding for health-related hourly care needs

Personal Health Budget (PHB)

  • Provides flexibility in how you receive healthcare and support
  • Can be used to fund hourly care services related to health needs
  • Discuss this option with your local Integrated Care Board (ICB)

Local Authority Funding

Local Authorities are required to assess care and support needs for all individuals:

Care Needs Assessment

  • Contact your local council’s adult social services department
  • They will evaluate your care requirements, including any need for hourly care

Financial Assessment

  • Determines your contribution towards care costs
  • If your assets don’t exceed £23,250, you may be eligible for financial support
  • The value of your home is not considered for hourly care provided at home

Direct Payments

  • If eligible for council support, you can request Direct Payments
  • Allows you to arrange and pay for your own hourly care services
  • Gives you control over when and how you receive care

Benefits and Allowances

Several benefits can help fund hourly care:

Attendance Allowance

  • For those aged 66 or over needing help with personal care
  • Lower rate: £68.10 per week
  • Higher rate: £101.75 per week
  • Not means-tested and can be used flexibly

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

  • For those under 66 with long-term health conditions or disabilities
  • Can help fund hourly care needs

Carer’s Allowance

  • For those providing at least 35 hours of care per week
  • Can be claimed by a family member providing regular hourly care

Private Funding

If you’re not eligible for NHS or Local Authority funding, or if you require additional hours of care, private funding options include:

Income and Savings

  • Using regular income or savings to pay for hourly care

Equity Release

  • Access the value in your home to fund care
  • Can provide a lump sum or regular payments

Care Fee Payment Plans

  • Insurance products designed to cover the cost of care

Combining Funding Sources

Many people find that a combination of funding sources works best for their hourly care needs. For example:

Using Direct Payments from the council for basic care needs
Topping up with private funds for additional hours or services
Utilising Attendance Allowance to cover extra support or respite care

Remember, funding situations can be complex, and every situation is unique. We recommend seeking professional financial advice to ensure you make the best decision for your individual circumstances.
