“I can just about manage.”
How often do you say this to yourself or a family member? Maybe you prefer to struggle on your own, rather than accept help from others. So, when is it time to accept help?
A common dilemma is when a loved one starts to experience difficulties with day-to-day tasks. If you are in this position, you might not want to admit to anyone that you’re struggling. We understand. Many families overlook the importance of pride and dignity, and this is when relations can break down. People feel vulnerable when they can no longer easily do the things they used to do. You might start to feel stressed and defensive.
The problem with stigma and secrecy
Are you determined to put up that picture despite the arthritic pain in your hand? Have you started experiencing mobility or memory problems? Are you putting off asking for support because of any stigma associated with your challenges? Without sharing important information with those you love and trust, this could cause issues later down the line.
It’s okay to ask for help. Have you been keeping your physical or mental health secret because you fear you will be judged? The sooner you share your concerns, the sooner you can get back to enjoying your life. There’s support out there if you know where to look.
You shouldn’t have to just ‘manage’
Everyone deserves to live the best life they can, no matter what challenges they’re facing. Your family can support you better when they know what you can and can’t do. There’s no shame in accepting a helping hand from a friend, family member or a carer. With the right level of care, you can live as independently as you like and stay in your own home.
Promedica24 has recently launched a new hourly home care service in Blaby and Lutterworth, South Leicestershire. Whether you need some extra help with laundry, cleaning, cooking or shopping, you can choose between 30-minute, 45-minute, 1-hour visits, and more.
Your dedicated carer will visit at a time to suit you. They can also accompany you to medical appointments and collect prescriptions. Our Blaby-based office is led by Lisa Colver, a highly experienced health and social care professional with 35 years of expertise. Lisa is registered with the Care Quality Commission, and has handpicked a team of qualified carers, who are trained to look after varying needs.
“When it comes to carers, I look for qualities such as communication, empathy, respect, a caring attitude and a ‘can do’ approach. My carers have good problem-solving skills, and they’re proactive rather than reactive to changes in health.”
Lisa Colver, Lead for Promedica24 Blaby Home Care
Passionate about care provision, Lisa has the experience to solve common issues and signpost you to the right level of care at the right time. We’re here for your whole care journey, whether you need one hour a week or full-time, live-in care.
