National Pet Month

Owning a pet is one of the greatest joys for many, which is why this entire month has been dedicated to our furry little companions. For many people living with difficult health conditions, having a pet often provides some much needed comfort, especially from a mental health perspective. However, not everyone treats animals the way they should be treated, which is why this campaign has been created, to further educate people about basic animal welfare.

What is National Pet Month?

Across a number of platforms, National Pet Month is based around raising awareness over responsible pet ownership. It’s also being used as a celebration of our pets, who, especially over the course of the pandemic, have stuck by our side and reduced the effects of loneliness dramatically during periods of lockdown.

The core messages being spread throughout this month are also being encouraged to further continue throughout the year, this way, the spotlight can remain consistently in place to ensure major changes can be made where necessary.

Whether you’re new to owning a pet or currently living with a long-term companion, there’s lots of content available to give you a deeper understanding of how they should be treated. In terms of participation, this really comes down to you, so look out for welfare charities and organisations which are holding events, and don’t forget to use social media to spread more awareness online.

Why is This Important?

It’s important because every animal has the right to a proper standard of living, rather than being used for entertainment or being inflicted with harm for no discernible reasons. There’s five core domains which are expected to be observed; good nutrition, a suitable living environment, proper health, displaying natural behavioural traits, and having a comfortable mental state.

The Benefits of Owning a Pet

Exercise

When living with cancer or Alzheimer’s in particular, it can be easy to become consumed with your condition, often at the expense of getting some much needed exercise. Sometimes we just need a reason to get up and out of the house, and that’s where dogs can certainly play a hugely positive role.

Your daily dog walks provide you with a concrete purpose to go outside, where you’ll feel the compassionate warmth from making your pet happy, and also the huge mental health boost you’ll receive from physical exertion.

Companionship

Loneliness is a very difficult thing to live with, as many have discovered during the pandemic. For those dealing with the effects of deteriorating health, loneliness can become a reality quite quickly. Even with proactive live-in care support readily available, having a pet during the intervening hours when your carer isn’t present will ensure you have a permanent source of companionship

This would be another instance where dogs are great, as they’re well known for lapping up human contact, so you’re certain to feel the warmth from them as they clearly demonstrate their gratification about having you around.
