Oadby Royal British Legion Club: Golden Years Club
Wigston Rd, Oadby, Leicester LE2 5JA
New Members Welcome – Join us at 11am Every Tuesday
Every Tuesday at 11am, something special happens at the Oadby Royal British Legion Club. The Golden Years Club comes to life – a warm, welcoming space where people from all walks of life come together for a cup of tea, a friendly chat, and some good old-fashioned fun.
There’s something comforting about the familiar buzz of conversation, the friendly laughter, and the clink of mugs being set down on tables. Whether you’re here for a game of bingo, hoping to win something in the raffle, or simply looking for a place to unwind with a bacon or sausage cob and chips, there’s always a friendly face to greet you.
But this isn’t just a social club; it’s a vital part of the local community. For many, the Golden Years Club is a lifeline, offering companionship and support in a safe and welcoming space. At the heart of it all is Marrion, better known as Maz who, alongside her dedicated team of volunteers, has worked tirelessly to bring people together.
Maz, an ex-forces wife, has always had a deep-rooted passion for supporting others. Whether she’s baking cakes for Forces coffee mornings or lending a listening ear, her care for the community shines through. The Golden Years Club is no different, it’s a reflection of her commitment to making sure no one feels alone.
The pandemic brought difficult times for the club, as it did for many community groups. With the loss of some beloved members and the passing of the previous organiser, it seemed as though the future of the club was uncertain. But Maz wasn’t ready to let the club fade away. After attending a committee meeting, she felt inspired to bring the group back to life. Reaching out to volunteers like Audrey Hammond, Jackie, and Eddie, they worked together to make the club what it is today a place full of life, laughter, and friendship.
Now, every Tuesday feels like a little celebration of community spirit. Friendships are formed, stories are shared, and there’s always someone around to offer support for those who might be feeling a bit lonely. The difference it makes to people’s lives is clear to see.
The club has also found support from Promedica24 Home Care, who are now a regular part of these gatherings. Their team offers advice on care-related topics and points members towards helpful services. Their presence has been a great comfort to many, ensuring that support isn’t just emotional but practical, too.
This week, Promedica24 Home Care Blaby and Lutterworth added something extra special by donating prizes for the raffle and a generous gift voucher for the bingo winner. Sylvia, who took home the bingo prize, couldn’t have been happier. It’s the small moments like these that make the club feel like a second family.
Behind the scenes, people like Eddie, Audrey, and Jackie keep things running smoothly. Eddie brings energy and fun as the club’s bingo caller, while Audrey and Jackie help with everything from setting up drinks to sorting out the raffle and washing up. It’s these little acts of kindness that keep the club going strong.
The Golden Years Club is about more than tea and bingo, it’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and valued. If you’re looking for good company, a friendly chat, or simply a reason to get out of the house, you’ll find it here.
New members are always welcome. Pop by and join us at 11am every Tuesday at the Oadby Royal British Legion Club.
