Barbara’s Story: Live-In Care That Supports Both Client and Companion

Understanding the Care Challenge

Before receiving care, Barbara* lived alone in her home with her small dog. She had already been diagnosed with dementia, which gradually made it harder for her to manage daily tasks. Barbara often forgot to eat, struggled with personal hygiene, and was no longer able to keep her home clean. Although she faced these challenges, her connection with her dog remained a constant source of comfort.

One thing that always stood out about Barbara was how she lit up whenever her dog was nearby. Even as her memory declined, she never forgot the dog’s name or their daily routines together. Unfortunately, as Barbara’s ability to care for herself diminished, so did her ability to properly look after her pet.

Barbara had no close family, and a solicitor had been managing her affairs for several years. It was the solicitor who, on noticing Barbara’s increasing difficulties, recognised that the care she was receiving wasn’t enough. Occasional visits from carers left too many gaps in support, and the condition of the home had deteriorated. Concerned for Barbara’s safety and wellbeing, the solicitor began looking for a care provider who could offer a more dependable and consistent solution.

Choosing the Right Care Provider

At the time, Barbara’s situation had become quite serious. Meals were missed, the home was cluttered and unhygienic, and her beloved dog wasn’t being let out often enough. Any care plan would need to consider not only Barbara’s personal care but also the wellbeing of her pet, which was essential to her emotional health.

The solicitor had previously worked with Promedica24 on behalf of another client and was impressed by the level of care provided. Confident in the service, she reached out again, believing Promedica24 would be a good fit for Barbara’s situation.

How Promedica24 Stepped In

Tibor, Barbara’s local Care Consultant, visited Barbara’s home to carry out an initial assessment. It was immediately clear that several issues needed addressing before a live-in carer could move in.

Tibor quickly set to work organising everything. A thorough clean of the house was arranged, and the necessary furniture and household essentials were sourced. His hands-on approach ensured that both Barbara and the incoming carer would have a safe and comfortable living environment. Tibor’s careful planning and attention to detail meant care could start without delay.

A New Routine with Live-In Care

Barbara’s live-in carer now provides round-the-clock support, helping with daily tasks such as personal hygiene, preparing regular meals, ensuring Barbara stays hydrated, and maintaining a clean and tidy home. Beyond these essentials, the carer offers companionship, which has made a noticeable difference to Barbara’s mood and sense of security.

Importantly, the carer also takes care of the dog, letting it out into the garden regularly and ensuring it receives the attention it needs. This was a key part of the care plan, as the solicitor recognised how much the dog’s presence meant to Barbara.

To give Barbara more freedom, a wheelchair ramp was installed, making it easier for her to leave the house. Now, with the carer’s support, she is able to enjoy short trips outside for fresh air and a change of scenery.

The Impact of Live-In Care

Since the care arrangement began, Barbara’s quality of life has improved in several ways. Her home is clean and organised, and she receives the personal care and nutrition she needs each day. The companionship provided by her carer has helped reduce feelings of loneliness and anxiety.

An unexpected but welcome benefit has been Barbara’s ability to go outside again. These outings, though modest, have lifted her spirits and added variety to her routine. The dog, too, is thriving with regular care and attention.

The live-in carer works alongside other healthcare professionals, such as the district nurse, to ensure that all aspects of Barbara’s care are managed effectively. This joined-up approach means any health concerns can be addressed quickly, and adjustments to her care can be made when needed.

Looking to the Future

Barbara’s main wish is to continue living safely in the home she loves, surrounded by her belongings and with her loyal dog at her side. Thanks to the support of her live-in carer, she can do just that. The care arrangement has not only made everyday life easier but has also restored a sense of dignity and peace of mind for Barbara and those responsible for her wellbeing.
