Earlier this year, I took on a challenge I’d signed up for two years ago a 47-mile ultra marathon around Lake Windermere, known as The Lap. I’ve always enjoyed walking and being outdoors, but I hadn’t realised when I registered that this would be a full-blown ultra marathon. With 9,000 feet of vertical elevation and 24 hours to complete the route, this was going to be no ordinary walk.
What I didn’t expect at the time of signing up was just how personal this event would become.
A few months before the event, a close personal friend of mine Paul, sadly passed away due to a heart-related issue. It was a devastating loss, and I knew I wanted to do something meaningful in his memory. So, I turned this challenge into a fundraiser for the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and created a JustGiving page, initially aiming to raise just £200.
My wife immediately got involved, sharing the page across Facebook before, during, and after the event and the response was nothing short of incredible. Donations started rolling in, and I was overwhelmed by so many people’s kindness, encouragement, and support. I was tagged in posts and comments by friends, family, and colleagues, and even shared across internal groups. The messages were full of positivity and motivation. It really hit home just how many people were touched by Paul’s story, and how many wanted to make a difference.
A Challenge That Became a Mission
The fundraising quickly gained momentum. Halfway through the challenge, my wife told me that the JustGiving page had far surpassed our original goal, and we’d raised over £800. That update came at exactly the right time.
I was 32 miles in, physically and mentally drained, with the final 15 miles ahead of me in the dark. I’d hit the wall, and the steep climbs and rough terrain were taking their toll. But knowing how much support was coming in reignited my determination. I couldn’t stop now, not with so many people behind me. I wanted to finish strong to honour their generosity, and more importantly, to honour Paul.
After 18 and a half hours, I finally crossed the finish line tired, aching, but incredibly proud. It was epic. It was brutal. But it was absolutely worth it.
Support From the BHF and Beyond
In the lead-up to the event, the regional representative from the British Heart Foundation reached out to say how amazing the fundraising effort was. They even sent me a BHF t-shirt, which I proudly wore during the ultra. That recognition meant a lot and it reminded me that this was bigger than just one event.
Through this experience, I’ve seen the best of people their generosity, encouragement, and willingness to rally behind something meaningful. As a care provider, I’m always working for the greater good helping people navigate challenges, secure funding, arrange support, or simply be there when something goes wrong. But this time, I found myself on the receiving end of that same compassion and support—and it meant everything.
Thank You
To everyone who donated, shared the page, sent a message, or simply cheered me on – thank you. You’ve helped turn one man’s challenge into a heartfelt tribute and a lasting impact.
Together, we’ve raised money that will go toward funding vital research, supporting families affected by heart disease, and helping to create a future where fewer lives are lost too soon.
You made this possible. 💙
