Can People in the North West Really Afford Their Own Care? What Our Latest Survey Reveals

Thinking about future care for yourself or a loved one is never easy—especially when the costs are rising and the options feel overwhelming. At Promedica24, we recently conducted a survey that sheds light on how people in the North West are feeling about funding their own elderly care. The results are a little concerning and show just how many families are facing uncertainty.

Only 37% of people in the North West believe they will be able to self-fund their care. That’s one of the lowest figures across the UK, where the national average sits at 42%, and London leads with 60% of people expecting to pay for their own care. Instead, 42% in the North West expect to rely on support from their local authority, while 30% anticipate help from family members. This tells us there’s a lot of worry about whether care will be affordable or even accessible.

The survey also found that 25% of people here would be willing to sell their home to pay for care, and a striking 38% said they would consider moving abroad to find better or more affordable options. These are big decisions that highlight how difficult the financial pressures around care can feel.

There are also some differences between men and women in how they plan to fund care. Across the UK, 47% of men expect to self-fund their social care, compared with just 37% of women. When it comes to selling their home to pay for care, 31% of men are open to this, whereas 24% of women feel the same. These differences show just how personal and complex these decisions can be.

With care costs rising—largely due to minimum wage increases and an ageing population (almost one in five people in the UK is now over 65)—it’s more important than ever to start planning ahead and having honest conversations about care.

Why It’s So Important to Talk Openly About Care and Know Your Options

Jonathan, Franchise Partner at Promedica24 Wirral and Cheshire East, stresses how crucial it is for families to start these conversations early. He explains, “Our research highlights a real worry about how affordable and accessible care is in the North West. With only about one in three people feeling confident they can pay for their own care, it’s essential that families look at all the options available—including live-in care and hourly support.”
