What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects around 1 in 100 people. It often influences how a person experiences the world, including how they communicate and interact with others.

Everyone’s experience of autism is different. It’s not an illness and doesn’t need to be “cured.” With understanding, encouragement, and the right support in place, autistic people can live full, rewarding lives with as much independence as possible.

Autistic people may:

  • Find social interaction and communication challenging
  • Prefer routines and familiar environments
  • Engage in repetitive behaviours
  • Be especially sensitive to sounds, lights, or crowded places

What are Learning Disabilities?

A learning disability is a lifelong condition that affects how someone processes information, learns new skills, and communicates. It can make certain everyday tasks, such as managing money, reading, or understanding instructions, more difficult.

The impact of a learning disability varies from person to person, and some individuals may have additional physical or sensory challenges. Learning disabilities can also be diagnosed alongside autism.

With the right care and opportunities to build confidence and skills, people with learning disabilities can lead independent lives within their home and community.
